The 2000s
1) Thinking of the first decade of the 2000s, it is my opinion that there
were only few positive events that have
marked this time:
- the dreaded millennium bug did not happen;
- the euro enters into European currency in 2002;
- in 2009, in USA, elections were won for the first time by a not-white president, Barak Obama: his election was greeted with enthusiasm all over the world as a symbol of democracy;
- the spread of the Internet which allowed faster communication among people around the world.
There were, instead,
many tragic events
all over the world: natural events
such as a violent tzunami, that devastated Asian coasts. It was
considered one of the greatest natural disasters in the history.
Another one, was Hurricane Katrina, that swept the southern United
States, completely devastating the city of New Orleans.
There have been many
other tragic events caused by man,
for example the wars in the warmer parts of the planet: Afghanistan,
Iraq, Darfur, Gaza, Israel, etc., the crisis of the new economy, and
so on.
The
most memorable event was the felling of
the twin towers in 2001, by Islamic terrorism, led by Bin Laden: the
fear of terrorism spread around the world and continues today.
2) In
the world of music Michael Jackson died
at the age of 50 years; he was a star of international pop music.
About the cinema,
the Harry Potter films were very successful and also the saga of
Lord of the Rings. For American cinema, this is a decade marked by the
stars like: George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp,
Angelina Jolie, etc.
There was a lot of change with regard to the fashion, it was the era of leggins, low waist pants, long sweaters, pointed shoes and french manicure.
In
the field of digital electronics,
Microsoft born and Windows spread all over the world.
The
progress has been considerable: mobile phones, digital cameras and
MP3 players, email and social network were affordable to everyone.
